THiRTEEN YEARS of TRUTH and LiES
… is a collection of original songs performed with an emphasis on melody, vocal harmony, rhythmic interest and developed production, on an eclectic underpinning of rock, jazz, latin and pop. Something for almost everyone, in fact.
Recorded at Bare Bones Music Studio, Westfield, New Jersey USA (September 1994 to May 1995)
ViC PEPE: Production, recording and general groovy coolness, plus instruments various as ascribed.
All songs written and performed by STEViE ZiPP
1. ACCiDENT
5m10s
Pop-rock story of post break-up angst. Strong sax and Vic Pepe production at its best. Big.
ZiPP: Vocals, Acoustic guitar, Electric guitar, Bass
ViC PEPE: Keyboards, Brass arrangement, Drum programming
HARROLD M. FRAZEE: Synth Sax
2. Set You Free
4m45s
Funk-esque medium ballad, and a bit of an ear-worm. A melody and refrain that connects with the lyric, and a pretty reasonable ZiPP guitar solo to boot.
ZiPP: Vocals, Acoustic guitar, lead and second Electric guitar, Bass, Congas & Bongos
ViC PEPE: Orchestration, Keyboards, Drum programming
3. The Reason Why
3m50s
Using an E-shape chord all the way up and down the fretboard. Haunting, despite the poor grammar in the title. In the style of Richie Havens, a philosophical meander on life and stuff.
ZiPP: Vocals, Acoustic guitar, lead and second Electric guitar, Bass, Percussion intro.
ViC PEPE: Orchestration, Keyboard, Drum programming
4. The Closest That i Get
3m23s
After driving past a bloke standing in the dark and freezing cold, under the light of lamp-post, looking up at a window; this song was written in a car park a few miles down the road.
ZiPP: Vocal, Spanish guitar (custom built by Martin Notley)
ViC PEPE: Strange keyboard sounds, Arrangement
5. She’s So
5m10s
Rock guitar, driven hard across interesting time signatures. Vic Pepe plays Ian Housley solos while ZiPP reaches the high notes. Lyrically puzzling.
ZiPP: Vocals, second Electric guitar, Bass
ViC PEPE: Church organ, Piano, lead Electric guitar, Drum programming
6. Men and Women
4m05s
A ¾ time waltz on love and the mystery thereof. Dance if the urge takes you.
ZiPP: Vocals, Bass, Electric guitar
ViC PEPE: Keyboards, Piano, Drum programming, Orchestration
7. Stare Out the WiNDOW
2m43s
Like a prelude to the main event, a thoughtful reflection on the window that separates lives.
ZiPP: Vocals, Spanish guitar (the Notley), Bongos
ViC PEPE: Orchestration, Keyboards, Drum programming
8. Cry WiTHOUT a Tear
5m57s
Lots going on. But what does it all mean? Take a journey all the way to the beginning.
ZiPP: Vocals, Acoustic guitar, Bass, Congas
ViC PEPE: Keyboard, Spanish acoustic guitar solos, Drum programming
9. The Reason Why (Young Person's REMiX)
4m25s
The offspring and latin percussion get in on the act; ‘the reason why’ indeed.
The third visit to this song (see ‘THE LOST FiRST ALBUM) - by popular demand.
ZiPP: As above plus full latin percussion smorgasbord intro
ViC PEPE: As above plus vocal and percussion intro mix, purifying overall remix
DANiEL, THOMAS, CAMiLLA, and JENNiE: Intro vocals
(incl. ‘When I Saw The Dinosaur’ © Zipp & Martin music)
Special thanks to Jennie for her encouragement, support (usually) and inspiration; Dan, Tom and Millie for their enthusiasm and dancing; Carol Barnes, for everything; Dom and Pat Volini for waltzing in the middle of Kimball Avenue to Men & Women; Alex and Jan Maw, for the Platinum Band; Ian Housley, for the licks and much else later (see ‘Camouflage); Martin Notley for building a beautiful guitar; Carlos Santana, for being there Every Step of the Way; Mitch and Susan Farber, for not laughing; Kathleen Murtha, for the feedback.
And to Vic Pepe - for moving to Westfield (post Alice Cooper), for the professionalism, the production, the playing, the musicality and the fun, and for being a cool street guy.
